Cyber Security and Password Security
Almost everything we do online requires a password. With cyber crime on the rise, password safety is paramount. Here are some tips to stay safe online.
For the ultimate password safety, it would be nice to have a password comprising of a string of random letters, numbers and characters that make no sense. Well now you can, and you don’t even have to memorise it!
Password fatigue has led to people using the most hackable words or numbers. Not surprisingly, 123456, qwerty, password and 111111 are amongst the most common passwords worldwide. The types of passwords most hacked are names, animals, emotions, foods, colours, swear words, actions, family members and car brands.
There are simple ways to make yourself cyber-secure and harder to hack.
Use A Password Manager
Password managers generate, manage and store passwords. There are plenty of paid and free managers out there that randomly generate passwords that are impossible for anyone to guess. If you wish, you’ll be able to securely store and synchronise all your passwords for different websites and applications, and they’ll be able to autofill forms too. Some managers are suitable for personal use, others for corporate.
PC Mag has listed some of the best password managers based on various characteristics. Check them out to see which fits your needs best.
- Nordpass
- Keeper
- LastPass
- Proton Pass
- Dashlane
- RoboForm
- AgileBits 1Password
Use Multiple Passwords
If you use the same password for all your accounts, you’re making yourself vulnerable to an attack because the hacker can access everything with that one password.
- Use Multifactor Authentication
- Along with typing your password, an app or token is used to confirm it’s really you.
- Longer is Better
- The longer the password, the harder it is to hack.
- Make it Complex for Others
- Create a password that is easy for you to remember, yet hard for others to guess. Basically something that has significance only to you.
- Complexity is Important
- A word followed by a number isn’t always enough. Try placing a special character in between words.
- And this is obvious but done too often – don’t share your password with anyone, including sending it via email or text.
